German Corded Ware: migration and ancestry

The German Corded Ware reference illustrates a major transformation in Late Neolithic central Europe. Ancient-DNA research helps explain the role of migration, while archaeology and linguistic research address related questions that genetic similarity alone cannot resolve.

Corded Ware in the European Late Neolithic

Corded Ware is an archaeological designation associated with a broad European complex during the third millennium BC, approximately 2900–2300 BC. This page concerns the German reference in the World Genetics dataset, not every community assigned to that complex. Archaeological classifications group material traditions; they do not guarantee that all associated individuals had identical ancestry.

The label records n=12 and does not identify each burial, locality or radiocarbon determination. Accordingly, the broad Corded Ware date range should not be read as a precise date for this average. Regional and chronological variation must be considered when comparing it with other Corded Ware references.

Evidence for migration from the steppe

Haak and colleagues’ 2015 study found a major change between earlier central European farmers and the German Corded Ware individuals it analysed. Their model estimated roughly 75% Yamnaya-related ancestry in those individuals, providing strong evidence for migration into central Europe rather than cultural change alone.

This published result is not a calculation for the 12 entries behind the present World Genetics label. Matching a cultural name does not establish identical sample membership. The figure is useful historical context, while the interactive tools below describe the coordinates actually loaded on this page.

Connections to later Europe and language history

The 2025 synthesis places Corded Ware within the later spread of ancestry from steppe and European farming populations. It also discusses eastward connections through subsequent archaeological groups. This is a succession of demographic and cultural processes, not a claim that all later people descended from one homogeneous German population.

The association with Indo-European language dispersal is a historical hypothesis informed by several disciplines. Neither the archaeological label nor a genetic-distance score identifies an individual’s spoken language. A close modern match is therefore not proof that the German Corded Ware samples spoke that modern population’s language.

Why horse history needs separate evidence

It is tempting to explain every steppe expansion as an invasion by mounted warriors. A 2021 ancient-horse genome study rejected a simple association between horseback riding and the earlier Yamnaya expansion into Europe. Human migrations, the spread of domestic horse lineages and changes in transport need their own evidence and chronologies.

The modern heatmap below is another distinct layer of evidence: it visualizes similarity to living reference populations, not Corded Ware settlement boundaries or a migration route. Its strongest similarities should be interpreted alongside the ancient comparisons and published archaeological context.
