Early Corded Ware in Bohemia: a new population landscape
Early Corded Ware communities appeared in Bohemia around 2900 BC, at the beginning of a major transformation in central Europe. The change involved people as well as pottery: steppe-related ancestry entered a region already occupied by established farming societies, creating communities with varied family origins.
Bohemia at the start of the third millennium BC
Bohemia occupied a central position between the Elbe basin, the Danube world and routes leading east. Cord-impressed pottery, stone battle-axes and distinctive individual burials became prominent signs of the new cultural network. The early phase is commonly discussed around 2900–2600 BC, before later changes in population and social structure.
The landscape still contained people with different cultural traditions. Genetic and archaeological evidence shows that several distinct groups coexisted around 2800 BC. Early Corded Ware society took shape through interaction within this already populated region.
The major new ancestry layer was related to pastoralist populations of the Pontic-Caspian steppe. It joined ancestry inherited from Europe’s Neolithic farmers, who themselves carried varying hunter-gatherer contributions. The result was a marked shift from the earlier farming population, alongside considerable variation within the earliest Corded Ware communities.
The steppe connection also has a deeper history. New research places the formation of Yamnaya-related ancestry within interacting populations north of the Caucasus and around the lower Volga and Dnipro-Don regions. Corded Ware carried this broader eastern inheritance westward, through routes and communities that were not all genetically identical.
The earliest Bohemian Corded Ware groups included people with different ancestry backgrounds. Over time, communities absorbed additional local ancestry and their paternal lineages became much less diverse. These changes suggest that family organisation and unequal reproductive success mattered alongside migration.
Early Corded Ware is therefore particularly informative about the opening stage of Europe’s third-millennium transformation. It records a time when incoming networks and established farming communities were actively combining. The resulting steppe-and-farmer ancestry became widespread in later central and northern European populations, even as Corded Ware burial customs gave way to new cultural forms.
