Xiaohe: ancient ancestry and an oasis economy
Xiaohe is central to debates about the earliest Bronze Age inhabitants of the Tarim Basin. Ancient genomes and dietary proteins supplied evidence that substantially changed earlier migration-based explanations.
A cemetery within the Tarim Basin
Xiaohe belongs to an archaeological horizon in the arid Tarim Basin of southern Xinjiang. The 2021 genome study examined Early–Middle Bronze Age Tarim individuals from approximately 2100–1700 BC, alongside older Dzungarian individuals north of the Tian Shan. That study-wide range is not an individual date for every record on this page.
Keeping Tarim and Dzungaria distinct is essential. A general Xinjiang label would obscure environments and population histories that the study deliberately analysed separately.
The published Tarim genomes supported a local, deeply rooted Asian ancestry profile rather than the proposed derivation from nearby Afanasievo or Bactria–Margiana populations. Dental-calculus proteins from Xiaohe also provided evidence for consumption of ruminant dairy products.
Taken together, these results show why adopting a pastoral technology need not imply that the adopting population was replaced by its neighbours. The movement of practices and the movement of people can overlap, but one is not proof of the other.
The precise constituent IDs behind the n=10 reference have not been established here. The bibliography supports the cemetery’s research context, while a formal crosswalk is still required before attaching burial-level dates or findings to every coordinate sample.
The name Xiaohe also cannot settle the language of its inhabitants. Genetic isolation does not identify a language, and later Tocharian texts cannot automatically be projected backwards onto much earlier burials. This reference is best used as an ancient comparison point with explicit archaeological and temporal limits, rather than as a label for all later Tarim populations.
