Gonur Tepe: an oasis center of the Oxus civilization

Gonur Tepe was a major center in the ancient Murghab delta of southeastern Turkmenistan. It belonged to the Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex, often called the Oxus civilization, whose oasis settlements linked farming, craft production and interregional exchange. The main Gonur genetic profile represents a population with deep connections to earlier southern Central Asian and Iranian plateau communities.

An urban oasis in the Karakum

Gonur’s archaeological sequence is broadly dated to approximately 2300–1500 BC. The settlement occupied the ancient delta of the Murghab River, where water made intensive occupation possible within an otherwise arid region. Its scale and extensive excavation make it one of the most informative BMAC sites. Margiana’s communities formed part of a wider southern Central Asian world connected with Bactria to the east and the Iranian plateau to the southwest. Its river-delta setting was fundamental to that development.

Craft, ritual and distant contacts

The site preserves elaborate burial practices and evidence of highly skilled production. Decorated objects and exceptional polychrome work illuminate a rich visual culture, while exchanges with neighboring regions brought materials and practices across long distances. Gonur’s importance lies in the concentration of these activities at an oasis center. Its cultural connections also extended toward South Asia, placing the settlement within the wider network of Bronze Age societies between the Iranian plateau and the Indus world.

The main BMAC ancestry profile

The principal BMAC population largely descended from earlier local Copper Age groups, with ancestry connected to the Iranian plateau and an additional Anatolian farmer-related contribution. This combination differs from both the steppe pastoralists farther north and the Indus-related profiles found among some people at Gonur. The main Gonur reference therefore highlights the established oasis population. Comparing it with the separate IVC-profile reference makes the diversity within the same connected region visible. Together, those profiles reveal how an enduring local population could participate in networks that also brought people with substantially different ancestry into the oasis world.
