Khövsgöl DSKC: dairying without wholesale population replacement

The Khövsgöl reference links Late Bronze Age burial archaeology with a major question in Eurasian history: how pastoral lifeways spread among populations with different ancestry.

Burial clusters in northern Mongolia

Jeong and colleagues studied Deer Stone–Khirigsuur Complex burials in Arbulag, Khövsgöl, in northern Mongolia. The dated individuals in their research fell approximately between 1380 and 975 calibrated BC. Those are published study dates, not verified dates for every constituent of this reference.

The archaeological association matters because DSKC is a mortuary and monumental complex. Its label does not mean that every individual buried in that tradition had the same ancestry, occupation or degree of mobility.

Milk consumption and population history

The 2018 work combined ancient DNA with proteins recovered from dental calculus. Milk proteins demonstrated ruminant dairying, while the genetic evidence indicated limited western steppe ancestry in the principal Khövsgöl group. The authors interpreted this as substantial cultural transmission rather than replacement by incoming western pastoralists.

The same study identified individuals differing from the main genetic cluster. Their separate analysis is a reminder that a shared burial tradition and the presence of dairying do not imply a uniform population.

Putting the database reference in context

The current label records n=18. A matching count between a database and a publication is not enough to prove identical membership: quality filters, outliers and later dataset curation can change which people are averaged.

Compare the main Khövsgöl reference with the separately labelled Khövsgöl profiles in this database before drawing conclusions from one mean. Also keep the Bronze Age chronology distinct from later Mongolian empires. The 2020 regional transect showed that the eastern steppe subsequently experienced major changes, so the modern heatmap is not a map of DSKC ancestry remaining unchanged.
