Salkhit: an Upper Palaeolithic woman from Mongolia

The Salkhit skullcap provides rare genetic evidence from northeastern Mongolia long before the pastoral societies and empires usually associated with the region.

Discovery and identification

Miners discovered the skullcap in the Salkhit Valley in 2006. Its unusual morphology initially led to competing identifications, but ancient DNA established that it belonged to a modern-human woman who lived approximately 34,000 years ago. Neither the modern country name nor much later Mongol history defines her cultural identity.

The find is a single fossil, not a sampled cemetery. This makes claims about a community’s language, social organisation or marriage practices much harder than statements about the recovered individual’s genome.

Connections across early Eurasia

Massilani and colleagues found that Salkhit was more closely related to eastern than western Eurasians, while also carrying substantial ancestry related to western Eurasian populations. Their comparison with Tianyuan showed both shared early East Asian history and later interaction.

The original study’s admixture model and the coordinate comparison on this site are different analyses. A modern population appearing near Salkhit in a distance table does not establish that it supplied a historical ancestor, or that the same ancestry proportions apply to every early East Asian.

What the Denisovan evidence means

The Salkhit and Tianyuan genomes contain Denisovan-derived segments. Their relationship to archaic segments in living populations supports more than one episode of Denisovan admixture in the ancestry of modern humans. Salkhit herself was a modern human with inherited archaic ancestry, not a Denisovan.

For this n=1 reference, the safest interpretation is individual and comparative: it is evidence of a particular ancient genome at a particular time. The heatmap supplies present-day similarities and should not be mistaken for a reconstruction of where her relatives lived.
