Yamnaya Moldova: a corridor between the steppe and the Balkans

Present-day Moldova occupied a crucial position in the Yamnaya expansion. Between the Prut and Dniester, steppe and forest-steppe landscapes connected the northern Black Sea region with the lower Danube. During the late fourth and early third millennia BC, movement through this corridor helped carry new ancestry and burial traditions westward.

A landscape of routes and burial mounds

The broad Yamnaya period here belongs to approximately 3300–2500 BC, with the western expansion especially prominent around 3000 BC. Kurgan burial traditions linked the region to the wider Pontic world, while river corridors connected it with farming societies to the west and south.

Moldova’s position makes it particularly useful for studying the transition between the core steppe zone and southeastern Europe. Communities could participate in pastoral networks while maintaining relationships with neighbouring groups whose livelihoods and material traditions had developed within older agricultural landscapes.

Shared steppe ancestry with local variation

The predominant genetic connection is to the Yamnaya ancestry that formed farther east through interactions among populations of the Caucasus–lower Volga region and eastern European hunter-gatherer-related groups. By the time of the westward expansion, this shared ancestry was already widespread across much of the steppe.

North Pontic genomic research finds that people in Moldova could also carry ancestry connected to European farmers and other neighbouring populations. The variation is historically informative: it reveals encounters along the expansion corridor, rather than a population moving west without changing or interacting.

The regional role in Europe’s ancestry history

Moldova helps connect two scales of the Yamnaya story. Its strong eastern affinities show the reach of a continental migration, while its local mixtures reveal contact at the boundary of pastoral and agricultural worlds. The region was a passageway and a place where new communities formed.

The ancestry carried through this zone contributed to the Bronze Age populations of southeastern Europe. It joined the older farmer and hunter-gatherer layers already present there. Comparing Moldovan Yamnaya with Romanian, Bulgarian and more eastern groups makes the westward expansion visible as a sequence of related but locally different population histories.
