Loschbour: a Mesolithic reference from Luxembourg
Loschbour is important because an individual genome became a widely used comparison point for western European hunter-gatherer ancestry. That scientific role should not turn one person into a timeless population.
A person from a rock shelter
The published Loschbour genome comes from a roughly 8,000-year-old individual found at a rock shelter in Luxembourg, in a hunter-gatherer archaeological context. The 2014 study analysed it alongside an early farmer from Stuttgart and Mesolithic individuals from Motala. These contrasts made population change around the adoption of farming directly visible in ancient genomes.
The World Genetics label records n=1. Its country name identifies the modern location of the site, not an ancient Luxembourgish identity. With a single-person reference, an unusual family history or individual feature cannot be averaged away.
The 2014 analysis used Loschbour to represent part of the ancestry often abbreviated WHG. It distinguished that ancestry from early European farmer ancestry and from ancestry related to ancient northern Eurasians. These are statistical relationships between sampled genomes, not three pure peoples that remained unchanged throughout prehistory.
Later work enlarged the hunter-gatherer sample and revealed substantial geographical and chronological structure. Loschbour remains useful as a reference, but a good comparison also includes other western and central European hunter-gatherers rather than assuming it represents every Mesolithic group.
A modern reference can rank relatively near Loschbour because it preserves some related ancestry while also carrying ancestry from much later movements. That ranking cannot identify a direct descendant, reconstruct a family tree, or demonstrate unchanged cultural continuity since the Mesolithic.
Use the ancient comparison to examine differences among hunter-gatherer references and the modern comparison to explore surviving affinities. The heatmap places those modern affinities geographically; it does not reconstruct where Loschbour’s community hunted or travelled.
What is Luxembourg Mesolithic Loschbour DNA closest to?
In the World Genetics modern G25 comparison, the closest non-self match for Luxembourg Mesolithic Loschbour is Lithuanian North Žemaitija. Other nearby references include Lithuanian West Žemaitija, Estonian, Lithuanian South Žemaitija, and Lithuanian. This gives the Luxembourg Mesolithic Loschbour profile its nearest modern genetic context inside the current reference database.
