Lakenheath and Eriswell: early medieval communities on the Suffolk fen edge

The early medieval communities around present-day RAF Lakenheath occupied the historic parish of Eriswell in western Suffolk. Several nearby cemeteries preserve evidence from the later fifth through seventh centuries AD. Their proximity allows different burial traditions to be considered within one local landscape rather than as isolated discoveries.

Several communities sharing a landscape

Three extensively excavated burial grounds were in use at the same time during the later fifth and sixth centuries AD. One continued into the later seventh century. Their overlapping histories show that neighbouring families did not necessarily bury their dead in one central place.

Grave furnishings varied with age and sex, and some burials were markedly more elaborate than others. Weapons, dress accessories and exceptionally a horse-associated burial made differences visible within the wider community. Most funerals were less conspicuous than these exceptional displays.

Older monuments and new burial places

At one of the cemetery areas, the burial ground appears to have focused on older Bronze Age mounds. Early medieval use therefore gave a new role to features that had already marked the landscape for many centuries.

The Skills Centre excavations investigated another part of this funerary landscape between previously known burial grounds. Together, the discoveries show a concentration of early medieval activity across the area. The boundaries between cemeteries were meaningful locally even where they lay close to one another.

Ancestry and eastern England’s wider connections

Ancient-DNA research shows that eastern England received substantial ancestry from populations along the continental North Sea coast. Established British ancestry also contributed, and the balance differed between communities.

This regional history places the Lakenheath communities within sustained migration and local family formation. Their several cemeteries record the social life of that changing countryside, where shared material traditions could accompany different family histories.
